Outline of Lecture Course

- In the five meeting of this seminar, the instructor (Suzuki) will give lectures. The students will be asked questions. They should also give comments or ask questions on their initiative.

- There will be special lectures by foreign IP specialists (a judge and a scholar from Germany) in October and November.

- In two sessions, two doctoral students will give a lecture.

- The remaining classes will be conducted as seminars. Namely, assigned students will give presentations first, and then all the participants will join discussions which are moderated by the assigned students with assistance from the instructor.

- In these seminars, all the participants are expected to read assignments (academic articles and/or court decisions with comments) beforehand and contribute actively to the discussion.

Course Objectives

- This course aims to familiarize students with the basics of the Japanese law and international frameworks on the protection of intellectual property (IP).

- Among various kinds of IP, we will focus on patents, trademarks, copyrights and designs.

Textbooks None.
Course Materials/Supplementaries Materials will be distributed in hard copies or through the Internet.
Assessment
Prerequisites

For those who have not studied IP law so far, it is strongly encouraged to read materials which explain the basics of the law, such as brochures available from the website of the WIPO (http://www.wipo.int/about-ip/en/), before the seminar starts.
